Innovations in Solar LED Lights for Indoor Growers

A Little History

The popularity and scale of indoor farming and greatly increased over the past few years. With this trend is the need for indoor grow lights that provide the right intensity and balance of light spectrum to not only facilitate photosynthesis but to also increase yields and robust plants.  For many years if not decades, growers typically relied on HPS (high pressure sodium) lights because they provide the right combination of intensity and emit a red spectrum of light beneficial to plant growth.

Unfortunately, HPS lights have issues ranging from a 4–6-minute warmup time to reach full power and use a lot of electricity and create a lot of heat. HPS lights contain trace amounts of mercury (harmful to the environment if released from the tubes) and cannot be disposed of easily.

Going Green

As the world turns to more environmentally friendly solutions like LED several issues and concerns are at the forefront of growers. 1) The cost of replacing the lighting and fixtures and 2) the efficiency or lack there of regarding LED lights. Enter the State of California, which has banned the use of  lower-efficiency grow lights, (metal halide and HPS), which are favored by indoor growers. This order will force indoor growers to switch to LED lighting systems and of this post, the traditional lights are no longer allowed to be sold in California.

Growers are up in arms because of the costs of retrofitting their indoor grow lights and the fear that the LED lights will not provide the efficiency of traditional lights.
